Letter from Kirk Baumann

During the SIFE USA Regional Competition luncheons, we've been discussing The Benefits of Mentorship. I had the opportunity to attend the Charlotte Regional Competition, sponsored by Lowe's Companies, Inc. Guest speaker, Steve Szilagyi, SVP - Distribution from Lowe's had some great insight that I'd like to pass along in this installment of Career Corner:

Play Up - Keep good company with those that make you better. Surround yourself with supporters, not negativity. Use that positive reinforcement to improve yourself.

Open Up - Be ready to listen. Ask questions and listen to the answers. Listening is 90% of the benefit. What have you learned from your mentor?

Read Up - The wisdom of the world is on the book shelf. Better yourself through learning. Steve said, "True wisdom cannot be gained in 140-characters or less." Social media is an extension of traditional media, not a replacement. Ask your mentor for some book recommendations to help you on your journey and share your knowledge with others!

Look Up - Seek out the knowledge of those that are where you want to be in life. Don't just focus on right now. Focus on the future. Where do you want to be in 5 years? 10? 20 years? Connect with individuals who are in the positions in which you'd like to be in the future.

Sincerely,

Kirk Baumann
Director of Career Connections
